Beautiful hymns coming to theatre in April
By Bridget van Oerle
Johannesburg - Got a place in your heart for hymns?
Coming to Montecasino from 6 - 17 April at Pieter Toerien’s Main Theatre, fans of the genre can look forward to 90 minutes of pure musical bliss when Rocco de Villiers and his piano takes centre stage to play musical numbers inspired by his best-selling album Beautiful Beautiful Hymns.
He will perform some of the world’s most stirring classics like Abide With Me, The Holy City, Amazing Grace, Ave Marie, Glory Glory Hallelujah, How Great Thou Art, Holy Holy Holy, O Holy Night, Onward Christian Soldiers and Silent Night to name a few numbers in his inspiring repertoire.
But what gives the production even more meaning is the fact Rocco has been providing a very different audience to his typical one with his ivory-tickling talents.
He has been taking his much-beloved piano tunes to the elderly by incorporating senior homes into his schedule as he travels around South Africa. “I was invited by Shoprite Checkers to take a 20-minute performance to the elderly and I jumped at the opportunity because these people appreciate music yet find it extremely difficult to leave the senior homes where they reside,” says the talented piano man.
Rocco has already played at around 30-odd homes nation-wide and will continue to do so throughout this year. “What I enjoy most is visiting with the elderly folk for tea and cake after my performance. You pick up some great stories about their lives. I have immense respect for them and I hope my music brings back beloved memories of their yesteryears,” Rocco says.
Joining him on Montecasino’s Main Theatre stage is bagpipe player Estian Zietsman, organist Pieter van den Berg, violinist Lizelle le Roux, percussionist Stephen Liebenberg and actress Lauren Botha, who will collectively create a feast for the senses. Every hymn is treated as a treasured tune; perfectly staged, beautifully lit and superbly played.
Rocco is responsible for the musical arrangements with other credits going to Pop Planet Studios for the recorded music, Denis Hutchinson for set & lighting design, Liebenberg Acoustic for sound design and the striking Stoompomp costumes are designed by Hollywood Costumes.
Tickets: R100, R130 and R170. Group bookings of 20 or more get R50 discount on the R170 tickets and only pay R120 per ticket.
Rocco’s CDs, DVDs, sheet music, toy pianos and Stoompomp fashion will for sale at the door.
