Load limiting hits smart metered homes
Johannesburg - Eskom is taking back the power with a newly launched "Load Limiting" feature that goes into operation this week.
The power utility now has the ability to disconnect individual residents who consume too much power, when the grid is contrained.
The sytem works only on those who have smart meters installed in their homes.
Eskom says several 30-second power interruptions are first distributed to the user if their consumption is too high and if no action is taken, their entire household is cut off from the grid.
According to The Star newspaper, this new feature affects about 92 000 Joburg residents who have smart meters installed in their homes.
